Ban Ka Lan Snake Temple Festival, Penang, Malaysia.3

Ban Ka Lan Snake Temple Festival, Penang, Malaysia – A Joint Event by Penang State Tourism, Hokkien Kongsi, Penang and Snake Temple Resident Area Committee

Date:  15.02.2013

Time:  5.00 p.m. to 12 midnight

Venue:  Whole stretch of road in front of Snake Temple, Jalan Tokong Ular, Penang

A press conference was called at 11.30 a.m. on Monday, 28th January 2013 for YB Dato’ Abdul Malik, Adun Batu Maung, to present his cheque of Rm10,000/- towards the above Ban Ka Lan Snake Festival.  The Celebration Chairman, Tan Lye Hock and the Organising Chairman, Cheah Cheng Ean first briefed members of the press about the event.

Then YB Dato’ Abdul Malik addressed members of the press telling everybody that he was pleased to be involved in this very auspicious festival as it is the Year of the Snake.  First and foremost, he is an “Anak Pulau Pinang” and he has lived in Penang for 58 years.   The Snake Temple is one of the more famous and popular Chinese temples in Penang and he is proud to be associated with it.  He thought the name “Ban Ka Lan” actually derived from a Malay word “Pengkalan” as the Sungai Keluang flowed through this property in the old days and there was a jetty, hence the Hokkien name “Ban Ka Lan”.  That is the nature of our country  because our history is so intertwined with one another that even the names are related to each other’s language and culture.
