Press Conference by Y.B. Chow Kon Yeow on 3rd September 2014

LAND AT JALAN TANJONG TOKONG, PENANG FOR CHOOI BEE KEONG TEMPLE
The Trustees of Hokkien Kongsi, Penang are glad to inform you that the State Government of Penang has managed to resolve a long-standing matter for us. We had a problem with the exchange of land with Majlis Perbandaran Pulau Pinang regarding our land in Jalan Tanjong Tokong, which was acquired for the expansion of the road. MPPP signed an Agreement with Hokkien Kongsi, Penang in 1979, undertaking to give us the land of the present site of our temple, Chooi Bee Keong. This was not done  for 35 years.

We are pleased to say that we were called to see Y.B. Chow Kon Yeow on Wednesday, 3rd September 2014 at 10.30 a.m. for the presentation of the title deed to this piece of land.  A press conference was held in the Conference Room, chaired by Y.B. Chow Kon Yeow.  He was pleased to be able to resolve this matter for us and close the file on this outstanding land issue once and for all.

When Pakatan Rakyat took over the administration of the State Government in Year 2008, Hokkien Kongsi, Penang went to see him in Year 2010 for assistance with regard to our land opposite Snake Temple in Sungei Kluang, Penang.  When our land was acquired in 1974 for the highway, we were only paid for the area acquired (approximately 6,000 sq ft) and the balance of 25,000 sq ft was supposed to be exchanged for the present road in front of Snake Temple.  Nothing was done after the highway was built and neither did we get back the balance of our land for over 30 years.

We went to see Y.B. Chow for help in this long-standing matter and he arranged for the balance lot to be returned to us in Year 2011, after 37 long years. Needless to say we were very happy to have this title deed returned to us at our 155th Anniversary Dinner on 11th March 2011, which is documented in our book on The Story of Hokkien Kongsi, Penang.  This book was recently launched by Y.A.B. Tuan Lim Guan Eng on Saturday, 6th September 2014 at CRC Restaurant, Victoria Green, Penang.

Now we can finally close the files on these 2 land issues.  A big thank you to Y.B. Chow Kon Yeow, Penang State Executive Councillor for Local Government, Traffic Management and Flood Mitigation for your invaluable assistance.
