Ban Ka Lan Festival 2015 – After Dusk

As the sun set over Snake Temple on the evening of Monday, 23rd February 2015, participants and spectators waited for the arrival of the Guest of Honour, Y.A.B. Tuan Lim Guan Eng, the Chief Minister of Penang.  The air was electric with anticipation as the hour drew nearer. There was promise of a great programme lined up for the spectators with the Beijing China Cultural Acrobatic Performance as the star attraction for the evening’s entertainment.

Thank you to our Webmaster Peter Ho and his partner, Chua Boon Keat together with Michael Chuan and Max Teoh Yeam Chuan for taking these amazing photos for Hokkien Kongsi, Penang.

Ban Ka Lan Festival 2015 – Before Dusk

This event was held during the evening of 23rd February 2015, jointly organised by Penang State Government and Hokkien Kongsi, Penang.  Our Webmaster, Peter Ho and his partner Chua Boon Keat and another team of photographers Michael Chuan and his partner Max Teoh Yeam Chuan sent amazing photographs to me capturing the very essence of the Festival.  You can see the colours of Chinese New Year, the festive atmosphere and visitors and families coming to witness this very traditional religious Festival organised by Mr. Cheah Cheng Ean and his Committee.  Truly Penang – that is how I would personally describe this event as having a little bit of everything for everybody.

In this article, I shall endeavour to showcase the beautiful photographs taken before dusk.  I will feature night-time scenes in another article.

Ban Ka Lan Snake Temple Annual Flame Watching Festival 2015 (“Chneah Hoay” Ceremony)

At 11.30 p.m. on the 5th day of the 1st lunar month, there is the usual “Chneah Hoay” ceremony by Cheng Hoe Seah to forecast the economy of Penang.  Usually the Main Hall of Snake Temple is so full of devotees that it is difficult for our photographers to take photos.  I received photos from Max Teoh Yeam Chuan (Alpha Moments Photography) and I was so impressed by the sequential photos he took of the “Chneah Hoay” Ceremony that I would like to share them with you.  The other photos were taken by Michael Chuan.  I think these are priceless photos and I am documenting them for posterity.  I have also added a sublime fish-eye shot taken by our Webmaster Peter Ho of the Main Hall of Snake Temple.
