I give below the programme for the Flame Watching Ceremony (Chia Hoay in Hokkien) at the Penang Snake Temple on Valentine’s Day i.e. Thursday, 14th February 2013 corresponding to the 5th day of the 1st lunar moon of the Chinese calendar.

8.00 p.m.

  • Flower distribution to celebrate Valentine’s Day

9.30 p.m.

  • Arrival of Guests
  • Lion Dance

10.00 p.m.          

  • “Chio Tian” Cultural Drum Performance
  • “Pak Kwa” Performance
  • Speech by Khoo Kay Hock, Chairman of Hokkien Kongsi, Penang
  • Speech by Encik Teng Chang Yeow
  • Prayers to Cheng Chooi Chor Soo Kong
  • “Tiam Ngan” (dotting the eyes) of the Festival Snake 2013
  • Snake Dance
  • “Chia Hoay” Ceremony (flame watching ceremony) to predict the economy of Penang
  • Opening by participants from various temples
  • Fairy Cultural Dance
  • Throwing of Mandarin oranges (for luck)
  • Fireworks Display
